A change of season especially Spring is the perfect time to clear out your house of extra clutter and stagnant energy that my have accumulated during the winter season. Start by doing a deep physical cleaning and purge of any unneeded items. Maybe begin with your closets and put together bags of clothes that you may want to donate, parting with those items that you have been holding onto for way too long. Chances are if you haven’t worn it 2 or more years you probably never will again. Open your windows and let in some fresh air so that new the energy can start to flow. Clean your windows and allow the light to shine on in. Vacuum your rugs and maybe even polish your hardwood floors.
Once the space feels organized and decluttered you will already start to feel the shift in the energy and begin the process of smudging.
What you’ll need:
Note: Typically I would purchase these items from my local wellness shop but with everything happening right now they can be ordered on Amazon.
Good quality white California Sage
Sage is one of the most sacred herbs among indigenious North American peoples. The clean burning sage is used in the energy cleansing ritual known as smudging (or purification), which in theory means the smoke would attach itself to the negative energy of the area and cleanse it so that it becomes positive energy. If you have a chime or bell of sorts you may also like to use that as well.
What is Palo Santo you ask? Palo Santo is a mystical tree that grows on the coast of South America and is related to Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal. In Spanish, the name literally means “Holy Wood”. It is part of the citrus family and has sweet notes of pine, mint and lemon. It will immediately uplift your spirits.
If you have bells, sound bowls or chimes you may want to use those as well.
Open the windows and doors if possible, light the sage and let it burn for a minute or so and then blow it out so it’s just smoking. Move around the house allowing the sage to fill the space…every nook and cranny, but be mindful or your fire alarms, you may even want to disassemble them for the moment. Then allow the smoke from the sage to fully leave the space taking all the stale or negative energy with it.
Once the space feels open and receptive…trust me you will feel it…light your palo santo and repeat the process allowing for the fresh new positive energy to enter.
After you have done the smudging you can go ahead and ring your chimes, bells or sound bowls if you like welcoming in the new energy.
You can certainly make this a practice if you like, repeating any time you are feeling like the energy in your space needs a breath of fresh air. I typically do it after a large gathering in my home, or times when I may have been feeling sad or low.
